A Protection Plan

If you have to, or want to, stay with a man who has been physically violent with you, please make a Protection Plan.
  1. Do you have an extra suitcase or shopping bag? Put enough clothes in it for yourself and your children for a few days. Use clothes that you do not wear regularly.
  2. Do you have documents to pack? a marriage certificate, birth certificates, rent receipts, car registration? You do not need these to seek shelter, but they will be useful if you decide to start divorce proceedings or deal with the Welfare Department.
  3. Do you have an extra set of keys for the house, car, and garage? Pack them now.
  4. Do you have at least a couple of extra dollars to pack?
  5. Where can you put the bag/suitcase? Put it where you can get to it and he won't. Use a friends house, attic, basement, children's toy box...any place he isn't likely to look. A place AWAY from your home is probably preferable, in case you have to leave suddenly.
  6. This plan will help you protect yourself and your children. When the violence begins to build take your children and leave. But always remember that you are the best judge of your own safety. Choose the time to leave as safely as you can.

NOW THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU WILL DO NEXT:

  1. Where are you going to make a phone call?
  2. Who are you going to call?
  3. How are you going to get there?

If you make this Protection Plan NOW then you can protect yourself and your children from any further violence that is predictable. If he gets violent only after a check arrives, or only after he has been drinking, please use a Protection Plan.
